The club was formed by Tom M. in 2002 to promote chess in Sparta -- especially to the student population. It has grown from the initial 15 members to over 150 members in 2009. Our adult membership is also growing. Tom M. is coaching chess in all the public schools in town -- talk about a major undertaking for which we should all be grateful. Our teams have attended numerous local, regional, and national tournaments. We have gone to events with more than 50 of our students participating.
While the club promotes casual chess playing, tournament chess is the lifeblood of the club. The club is a Silver Affiliate with the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF). The USCF keeps rankings of all players and most tournament results are reported. You can look up a player's ranking at USCF ratings. Our members ratings range from unrated to 1700+. Overall ratings for our members continue to improve.
In addition to training chess students and running tournaments, the club has run an open chess night in Sparta for the past several summers (see right sidebar).
Whether you are a beginner or planning to take your game to the next level, you are welcome to join us. To find out about the Sparta Chess Club and to join, download our handbook by clicking Parent Handbook 2009.doc The handbook details the club’s policies and mission, costs to join, and lists future tournaments that many of our members will play in.
